Papers of Robert Carter [manuscript], 1722-1783.

The papers contain a diary, 1722-1727, of Robert Carter, with accounts, slave records, and entries regarding the management of his plantation, Corotoman, social life, tobacco, and the slave-trade. Letterbooks, 1723-1732, of Carter, have letters regarding tobacco, financial matters, and slave discipline. (Letterbook for 1727-28 was reused back to front on blank pages). There is also a cornbook, 1743, with entries for corn given to slaves, sold, planted, fed to livestock, and delivered to the mill. A letterbook, 1773-1783, of Charles Yates, contains transcripts of letters regarding social life, legal and financial matters, dry goods, and tobacco.

Robert "King" Carter (1663-1732) was a colonial official and great landholder (300,000 acres). His sons were Robert Carter (1704-1731) and Landon Carter (1710-1778) of "Sabine Hall." Grandsons of Robert Carter included Robert "Councillor" Carter (1728-1804) of "Nomini" and Robert Wormeley Carter (1734-1797).
